General

Fluency is the ability to read text quickly, accurately, automatically, and with understanding. This is the area where the phonetic and eidetic sides of the English language come together along with auditory and visual memory, visual perception, tracking and all the prerequisite skills needed for reading come together in the blink of an eye allowing the individual to read fluently.

An excellent test to measure reading fluency is the Gray Oral Reading Tests (GORT). This test provides a measure of reading fluency based upon the accuracy and speed with which connected text is read aloud. An oral reading quotient is calculated from the fluency and comprehension scores.
