Eidetic processing refers to the phonetically irregular side of the English language specifically words that do not follow the rules of phonics. These irregular or "Dolch" words are responsible for giving meaning to much of the written English language. Unfortunately for the dyslexic these words cannot be sounded out but must instead be memorized. For example the word "laugh" is spelt phonetically "laf". Individuals with memory weaknesses struggle in the area of eidetic processing which can impact reading comprehension and speed.Students with deficits in this area may present as "word talkers" who are just saying the words without comprehending their meaning.
The DDT (Dyslexia Determination Test) by Reading and Perception Therapy Center is an excellent test to pinpoint weaknesses in this area.
Please "Scope & Sequence" for additional information on how the MD4 Reading program addresses weakness in eidetic processing.
