Visual Perception is the ability to perceive visual information accurately. A deficit in this area affects the ability to accurately process information that is presented through the visual modality.
Visual Perception should not be confused with eyesight. Although both are part of the visual system Visual Perception refers to how the information captured by the eyes is interpreted by the brain. Accurate interpretation of visual information is critical to fluent reading and this skills is trained extensively in the MD4 Reading program.
It is often difficult for someone with accurate visual perception to recognize a weakness someone else might have in this area. We all have only our own perceptions and understanding that someone perceives something as simple as a letter differently can be frustrating. This situation can be further complicated by the fact that sometimes an individual with a visual perception weakness will perceive something accurately. This might seem like a reason to celebrate but the fact of the matter is that unless the weakness is remediated this accurate perception is just a random occurrence.
An excellent formal test to accurately assess visual perception is the "Berry-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual Perception" test published by NCS Pearson Inc. .
